What to Include on Your Scottsdale Custom Food Labels

Creating labels for food is a bit more difficult than working with other types of labels. That’s because there are some very specific requirements put in place by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate what information must be included on the labels.

The FDA guidelines can be tough to navigate for food labels; for the benefit of all our customers and potential clients, we’ve provided the basic requirements below.

1.You Must Include a Prominently Displayed Statement of Identity

Consumers in Scottsdale need to be able to tell what your food product is with one quick glance. There can be no confusion as to the nature of the product; that means you need to clearly state what the product is in bold, easily readable print on the front of the food labels.

You don’t want anyone picking up your mayonnaise made with olive oil thinking that it’s a tapenade-type spread made from olives, do you? That would just lead to a bunch of angry consumers who are unhappy with your food.

So to avoid such a mess – and to correctly follow FDA regulations – make sure that your food labels include clear statements of identity prominently displayed on the front.

2.Labels Must Have a Net Quantity Statement

In addition to telling consumers exactly what type of food products you’re selling, you must also let them know the amount that’s in the container. The quantity is most often expressed in weight – usually in ounces and grams. With some food products the quantity can be provided in numeric count (such as 12 cookies) or measure (pints, quarts, gallons.)

According to FDA regulations for labels, the net quantity statement should be located on the front of the labels towards the bottom. It’s supposed to be listed separately from all other information and remain unobstructed by any artwork on the labels.

Keep in mind that the weight provided is for the food product only. The weight of the packaging should not be included in the net quantity statement.

3.There Needs to Be a Detailed Nutritional Panel and Ingredient List

Nutrition facts are required for the vast majority of food products sold in the United States. There are some exceptions, but they’re few and far between.

The statement of nutrition facts must be presented on an easy-to-read panel. The panel should include:

• How much a serving size is

  

• The number of calories contained within each serving
• How much fat each serving contains
• The amount of protein per serving
• The number of carbs included
• How much sugar is contained in the product
• The amount of fiber per serving
• How much sodium is included
• The types and amounts of vitamins and minerals found in the product

A comprehensive list of ingredients is also required as a part of FDA regulations on labels. If possible, this list should be provided directly underneath the food nutrition panel. If there’s not enough space on your labels for this type of arrangement, you may list the ingredients next to the panel. You must also clearly identify any major allergens that are contained within the product.

4.Labels Must Provide the Name and Address of the Manufacturer, Packer, or Distributor

The primary purpose of the FDA regulations is to keep the American food supply as safe as possible. That’s why it’s vital to have the name and address of the food producer on labels; if there’s ever a food safety issue in Scottsdale, this information allows authorities to trace the product so a recall can be announced and the facilities inspected, if necessary.
